 A Practical Introduction to Small Animal Fracture Management 

One-day Wet Lab and Workshop for Veterinarians

 The ‘Principles of Orthopedics’ course will provide delegates with a solid foundation in understanding the basics of orthopedics in small animal surgery. The course will include informative lectures followed by simulated cadaver osteosynthesis. Topics covered will include bone physiology, interpretating pre and postoperative radiography, approaches to commonly encountered fractures, pertinent anatomy, plate osteosynthesis and implant selection.

Key learning areas:

  • Performing a patient fracture assessment score, and then planning the best approach to optimize healing
  • Understanding the different types of bone healing, and how surgical technique can influence this
  • Performing and interpreting pre and post operative radiography
  • Basic understanding of orthopedic instrumentation
  • Basic understanding of different internal fixation techniques
  • Simulated fracture repair on a cadaver
  • Assessment of non – unions and strategies to deal with complications
